Ed O’Brien And His Commitment To West Haven Connecticut

Edward M. O’Brien was elected the 11th mayor of West Haven, CT, on November 5, 2013. Prior to being elected mayor, Ed joined the Democratic Town Committee in 2004 and served as a three-term city councilman, beginning in 2005. As an at-large councilman, Ed O’Brien served as majority leader from 2007 through 2009 and as chairman of the City Council from 2009 through 2011.

ED O’Brien has a strong passion for the City of West Haven, where he was raised on Washington Avenue in the Center District. He attended West Haven High School and graduated in 1982 before attending The Ezra F. Bowman Technical School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and the prestigious Gemological Institute of America in New York City. Ed O’Brien moved back to West Haven and utilized his education by starting and running his own small business, Goldworks, in the heart of the city on Campbell Avenue.

While in office, Ed O’Brien focused his administration’s attention on economic development and improving West Haven’s financial stature. Under Ed O’Brien’s leadership, West Haven has seen an unprecedented rise in economic development with the expansion of a variety of local businesses, new businesses moving into the city and an increased interest in West Haven from national entities. Ed O’Brien has taken steps including updating zoning ordinances, encouraging stronger blight enforcement and increasing marketing of West Haven as a business-friendly city to ensure this progress.

Ed O’Brien has also worked diligently to improve and expand West Haven’s regional profile. Ed has participated in the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he served on the Community Development & Housing Standing Committee, as well as the International Affairs Standing Committee. He has also greatly improved West Haven’s prominence in the South Central Regional Council of Governments, holding positions on the Transportation Committee and the Emergency Management & Hazard Mitigation Committee, along with being selected by his peers to serve as treasurer of the organization. Ed O’Brien was also appointed as the Treasurer of the CT Conference of Democratic Mayors and is an associate fellow at the Branford College of Yale University.

Ed O’Brien’s other civic service includes serving on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association, the Task Force for the Humane Treatment of Animals in Municipal & Regional Shelters of the Connecticut General Assembly and the West Haven High School PTSA. He serves on the Board of Directors of the West Haven Community House and is a member of the West Haven Irish-American Club and West Haven Elks Lodge 1537.

Mayor O’Brien enjoys spending time with his wife of 32 years, Roberta, and their two children, Caitlin and David.
